Itinerary

Day 1 Sacred Valley of the Incas Visit, Journey to Aguas Calientes

This tour Machu Picchu Sacred Valley starts at 6:30 am with the hotel pick up. We’ll be traveling in direction to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Prepare for a day of exploring history with Jungle Adventures Peru.

After leaving the Inca Capital (City of Cusco), we’ll drive for about one hour. On the journey we’ll be accompanied by green and yellow mountains. We’ll see crop fields and small villages.

Our first stop is the town of Chincheros. At 3,770 m / 12,370 ft above sea level. The town is famous for its textile craft and pottery. Our visit will give the chance to buy some traditional Andean artisanal goods.

We’ll visit the Chincheros’ Colonial Church. Inside we’ll see baroque paintings from the XV and XVII centuries.

These are representative of the “Escuela Cusqueña” art movement. This movement was the reinterpretations from Peruvian artists of Spanish art. The main themes were religious imagery.

In Chincheros Church’s you’ll also see gold leaf ornaments and wood carvings. The base of the structure is an Inca temple. The colonial church was built on top of it.

This is just the first stop of our visit to the Sacred valley of the Incas. Next in our Machu Picchu –  Sacred Valley journey is the Agricultural terraces of Moray.

The moray Inca Ruins sit at 3,500 m / 11,483 ft. This is an ancient experimentation center for crops. The most remarkable on the site is the circular agricultural terraces. They go down the earth. Each terrace has its own micro climate.

On a Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour, you can not visit Moray without visiting the Salineras. Also known as Maras Salt Mines.

Salineras at 3,210 m / 10,532 ft above sea level, is an operating salt mine. However it is unique for two reasons. One, it has been operative since before the Inca empire.

And two, its beautiful landscape. The salt harvest method prevailed for centuries. Each pond is property of diferent local families.

You’ll see hundreds of salt water ponds carved on the walls of a canyon. The individual ponds are property of local families. This is a communal industry that provides salt to gourmet restaurants and the local market.

For Lunch we’ll travel to the town of Urubamba. At 2,871 m / 9,419 ft, Urubamba is the heart of the Sacred Valley of the incas.

Our lunch will be a buffet. The Sacred valley floor is perfect for agriculture. You’ll be able to taste some of the high quality crops.

For the last stretch of the day on the Machu Picchu Sacred Valley tour, we’ll visit Ollantaytambo. To arrive there, we’ll drive next to the Urubamba River.

Ollantaytambo is the “Living Inca Town”. At 2,792 m / 9,160 ft, Ollantaytambo is also home to some ancient Inca Ruins. We’ll have a guided tour around the ruins. You’ll see the site constructed by the Inca emperor Pachacutec.

Back in Ollantaytambo town, we’ll go to the Train Station. We’ll take the train to Aguas Calientes. We’ll leave the Sacred valley of the Incas.

The arrival time depends on the departure time we get to book. We can opt for the 4:30 PM, 7:00 PM or 7:20 PM departure time. In general the Train to Aguas Calientes takes around 2 hours.

Our staff will be waiting for you in the Aguas Calientes Train Station. They will make sure you arrive at your hotel. Our staff will have a small sign with your name, so you’ll know.

You’ll have time to rest and get comfortable in your hotel. Later, our guide will give you a little briefing before the Machu Picchu visit. During the briefing, you’ll have the final details.

With that you can sleep for the night.

Day 2Visit to Machu Picchu, Return to Cusco

Our tour Machu Picchu Sacred Valley takes us to one of the most important destinations in South America. We’ll be visiting Machu Picchu.

A representative will pick you from your hotel. You’ll go to the bus station. The bus ride to Machu Picchu takes about half an hour.

Machu Picchu is at 2,455 m / 8,055 ft above sea level. At the entrance you’ll have to show your passport. This is an important safety measure for all Machu Picchu visitors.

Our Machu Picchu Sacred Valley journey includes a guided tour. You’ll enjoy all the important sites on the Citadel. Learn about the history of the site. The tour will last 2 and a half hours. You’ll see the harmonious Inca terracing on the mountain sites.

Inca construction incorporates the landscape without interrupting it. This means that Machu Picchu and the nature around us are seamless. Enjoy the ambiance and grandeur of the place.

After the guided tour, you’ll have time to go to Huchuy Picchu or explore the citadel on your own. The time is brief so don’t get too far.

We’ll travel by bus back to Aguas Calientes. Our adventure in Cusco and Machu Picchu is almost over.

You’ll have time to go for lunch (not included).  You may have some time to go for souvenir shopping. Remember that you have to be at the train station 30 minutes before the departure time. Be careful.

Our journey to Machu Picchu Sacred Valley will take us once again to Ollantaytambo. But your time there will be short. A private transport will be there to take you to Cusco. This will be another 2 hours of traveling.

In the city of Cusco, the bus will drop us near the Plaza de Armas. More specifically 2 blocks away. We hope you’ll enjoy our Machu Picchu Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour.
